The BRT's current Working Party 4 (WP4) addresses "Environment and Sustainable Development" issues and prepares recommendations to the Government of Japan and to the EU Authorities on these topics.

The BRT first addressed 'Sustainable Development' in a pilot way at its 2003 annual meeting. By the time of the 2004 meeting, a formal 'Sustainable Development' working party had been created. Over the years the exact title of the working parties have evolved to reflect their changing remit.
