The Kalevala Distillery was founded in 2012 by Moritz next to his maternal home in easternmost Finland.
A childhood in Germany, with frequent visit to his mother´s home in Finland developed a keen interest in Finland and Finnish culture. Already in childhood, the history of the maternal homestead as a renowned bootlegging center in the era of prohibition in the 1930´s aroused an unconscious interest for the world of spirits.
What was unconscious then would manifest itself more than a decade later in the choice to first study biochemical engineering and later chemical engineering at university.
With this background, building a distillery into a disused barn next to the maternal home was naturally the next step…
The distillery has been expanded in 2019 and production equipment has been upgraded more than once. Next to the founder there are now two full time employees, carefully bottling, labelling and checking all of our creations.
Despite growth and improvements, the most important things remain the same. We continue to produce the finest spirits using only organic ingredients and water from our own well. Keeping to our key values of quality, integrity and passion, the Kalevala Distillery remains family owned and run.
Using our London Dry Gin as the base for this gin, the real magic takes place here after the distillation. Prior to blending with water, the distillate is transferred to a vessel in which it is married with real cranberries and bilberries for a full two weeks. This marriage (or maceration) gives our Ruby Gin its distinct fruity and yet dry taste as well as its color. Once the time is up, the distillate is filtered prior to being blended with water from our own well to drinking strength.
For this very special creation, we joined forces with a renowned birch sap producers Nordic Koivu, from our neighbouring village. Based on our classic Vodka, this special spirit is diluted using the finest locally produced organic birch sap.
Tasting notes: a lovely silky and oily mouthfeel, with subtle floral and woody notes. This is rounded, sweet and balanced. A late pinch of white pepper adds warmth and further depth.
