Current Situation in Ukraine and Opportunities for Contributions of Japanese Companies
Russia's invasion of Ukraine entered its fourth year on 24 February this year. Various diplomatic efforts toward a ceasefire are being discussed in the international community, but fighting and destruction on the front lines continue. According to the damage and needs assessment report (RDNA4) by organizations such as the World Bank, post-war reconstruction needs are estimated at $524 billion (78 trillion yen) over the next 10 years, with particular concern over the severe energy shortages caused by attacks on energy infrastructure. What can Japan, with its extensive experience in post-disaster recovery, such as from the Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake and the Great East Japan Earthquake, do to help the people of Ukraine who are facing hardship? In this lecture, we will be joined by Mr. Tadayoshi Hiraki, First Secretary of the Japanese Embassy in Ukraine, who will provide an update on the current situation in Ukraine and discuss the contributions of Japanese companies.
