Recent Developments in Intellectual Property in the EU and Japan

October 06 2015

Overview

In Europe, necessary procedures for introducing the much anticipated “Unitary patent” are proceeding steadily. What are the potential impacts of the introduction of the unitary patent system on the Japanese enterprises which are major applicants for patents in Europe?

In Japan, the bill for the act for the patent revision passed the Diet in July 2015. With its revision of the provision on the employee invention system, it is anticipated that the act will contribute to further the promotion of innovations. Moreover, these influences of the revision are expected to spread not only to Japanese companies, but also to European companies operating in Japan.

With due regard to these developments, the seminar tried to shed light on the recent trends of intellectual property protection systems in Europe and Japan, and how the corporations are coping with these changes. In the second half of the seminar, the trending topic of “trade secrets” were focused on through introductory presentations followed by a panel discussion. The seminar was followed by a networking reception which will allow further exchanges between participants.
