Japan’s wine scene is one of the most interesting and dynamic in the world. As a mature market with discerning wine connoisseurs, Japan has long been a stronghold for Champagne and high-end wines. Even in the context of a declining alcoholic beverage market due to an ageing population as well as societal changes, Japan’s wine market has shown remarkable resilience. Indeed, since the mid-1980s, wine consumption has tripled, accounting for close to 5% of the overall alcoholic beverage market with a consumption volume of 361.000 kL in 2022.
While Japan’s domestic wine production is increasingly garnering both national and international recognition, imported wines continue to dominate, making up more than 70% market share. Japan’s Wine market is further supported by the extensive network of on- and off-premise distribution channels, making wine easily accessible to consumers.
However, new societal trends are disrupting the industry such as the “sober curious” movement, the rise of at-home drinking spurred by the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the increasing number of single households. These trends, coupled with the challenges of a declining population for the local wine production and supply chain, are calling for innovative new solutions. Learn more in this webinar about the Japanese Wine market, its challenges and opportunities in a constantly evolving context and find out more about how to approach this unique market
