Fossil Energy

 Latest update: March 2026

Introduction

Japan energy policy has been evolving in the recent past years with principles of energy security, safety, economic efficiency and environmental aspect, shaping Japan’s energy future. With a set target of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 and the “Green Digital” GX strategy, Japan aims at significantly transform its energy landscape.

According to the International Energy Association (IEA), the part of fossil fuel in Japan’s energy mix was 83.5% in 2024.  Due to geographical constraints Japan rely extensively on foreign imports, with coal, oil and natural gas accounting to the majority of Japan’s energy importations.

Even though Japan invests massively in renewable energy alternatives, and hopes to significantly reduces its carbon intensive energy sources, it’s clear that in the medium term Japan will continue to be one of the world's most significant fossil fuel consumer and importers.
