'About Japan' webinar series 246: The Japanese Wine market

25-03-2025 | 10:30 - 11:30 CET

What business opportunities does the Japanese Wine market offer to EU SMEs?

Japan’s wine scene is one of the most interesting and dynamic in the world. As a mature market with discerning wine connoisseurs, Japan has long been a stronghold for Champagne and high-end wines. Even in the context of a declining alcoholic beverage market due to an ageing population as well as societal changes, Japan’s wine market has shown remarkable resilience. Indeed, since the mid-1980s, wine consumption has tripled, accounting for close to 5% of the overall alcoholic beverage market with a consumption volume of 361.000 kL in 2022.

While Japan’s domestic wine production is increasingly garnering both national and international recognition, imported wines continue to dominate, making up more than 70% market share. Japan’s Wine market is further supported by the extensive network of on- and off-premise distribution channels, making wine easily accessible to consumers.

However, new societal trends are disrupting the industry such as the “sober curious” movement, the rise of at-home drinking spurred by the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the increasing number of single households. These trends, coupled with the challenges of a declining population for the local wine production and supply chain, are calling for innovative new solutions.
